FROM MY GENERATION TO YOURS

For 50 years, National Service (NS) has fulfilled Singapore’s critical need for defence and security. It has provided the peace and stability upon which we have built our country and is thus an important milestone in Singapore’s nation-building journey.

As we commemorate NS50 this year, we celebrate and reflect on the strength of the NS institution as a shared legacy across generations. Artists from The Singapore Art Society, have brought this theme to life with this painting measuring 2m by 4m, entitled ‘From My Generation to Yours’.

At the centre of this painting is a depiction of the NS Landmark. The NS Landmark is a sculpture comprising of life-sized infantry soldier holding his rifle standing close to the SAF flag. Beneath the flag are our young children. The NS servicemen and the children represent future of our society who will grow and assume the responsibility of defending our nation.

The artists from The Singapore Art Society have attempted to depict NS50 as a celebration of the journey that we have travelled together as a nation. The art piece hopes to inspire all Singaporeans to reflect on our journey thus far as a nation and work towards our continued shared journey as a country.

For the artists, it has been a remarkable experience to have worked closely with the Singapore Armed Forces and Home Team in making this paining a reality to commemorate NS50 through Art. It has also given fresh motivation and energy to theme as active contributors in nation building.
